Moxie’s story is heartbreaking.
Moxie was brought to the shelter by her owners at a time when she should have been enjoying the comforts of a home during her golden years. We can only guess what their reasons may have been, but the story they left Moxie with can be described as nothing more or less than sad. Moxie spent her first days at the shelter in a crate, which left her elderly body stiff and sore. From there, she moved to a kennel run, equally cold, hard, frightening and painful to an older dog.
Her sweet disposition won over the shelter staff and they eventually moved her to the front office where she happily greeted people and proudly wore her colorful ruffle and enjoyed the occasional jerky treat. However, Moxie’s sweet disposition couldn’t mask her pain and the shelter staff noticed that her shoulder in particular caused her great discomfort. After three long months, she was finally diagnosed with bone cancer and the painful decision to euthanize this beautiful girl was made. So much of Moxie’s story is distressing; the fact that her owners dumped her at a county shelter, the fact that she had an aggressive cancer, the fact that she gave the best years of her life to a family who turned their back on her during the time of her greatest need, the fact that she died at a shelter rather than in a home surrounded by the people that she loved.
The one bright spot in this poignant story is that Moxie did befriend the caring staff at the shelter. These dedicated workers recognized Moxie’s beautiful spirit and shared their love with her. Moxie is finally at peace, enjoying a place where her body is free from pain. We will never fully know your story Moxie, but we can love you despite the sadness which defined the ending.
